Funny How It Goes

Funny how it goes when you can see the path
But you can’t move your feet
When everybody knows that it’s time to act
But you’re staring at the street

It’s electric but molasses, standing still while time passes
Feeling restless, anxious waiting for who knows what
You want to scream or run off dancing, but you’re sucked into the trance and
And you can’t snap yourself out of your own thoughts

Funny how it goes when you know what should get done
But you can’t find the will
The list seems to grow into the setting sun
And all your time you kill

Try to think your way around it, to confuse it or astound it
You can struggle but it always is the same
make your lists and take a hit, but you know that you can’t outwit
as what you fight doesn’t even have a name

I am here, but not here
What seems clear is unclear
And I can't do a thing, do a thing now

Funny how it goes when you know just what to say
But you can’t move your lips
Stoic, your mind slows and the words fly away
Your mind-to-mouth, eclipsed

Chase it back with some more liquor, hoping you will get there quicker
While you’re young and numb and worries float away
The frustration is consuming, and everything that you're assuming
Doesn't have a reason you could really say

I am here, but not here
What seems clear is unclear
And I can't do a thing, do a thing now

I am here, but not here
What seems clear is unclear
And I can't do a thing, do a thing now

Funny how it goes when you can’t afford the laugh
And they all stare at you
You try to give it all, but you don’t even have half
so you borrow from tomorrow too

You can sleep the day away, or stay up late but you still pay
for the minutes and the hours that you spend
trying hard to crack a smile like a teary crocodile
going over all the letters you don’t send

I am here but not here (Funny how it goes)
What seems clear is unclear (It's so funny how it goes)
And I can’t do a thing, do a thing now
(Are my eyes even open, are they closed)
